Surface-transport and parcel operators in India still run the core of their day on paper and spreadsheets.
Surface-transport and parcel operators in India still run the core of their day on paper and spreadsheets. A customer invoice arrives as a PDF or a phone photo, someone re-types it into a consignment note, someone else writes box counts on labels, and by the time a 37-box shipment reaches the consignee nobody can say with certainty which box is missing. GSTINs, e-way bill numbers, freight charges and cash-on-delivery amounts are keyed in again at every desk, failed deliveries are followed up from memory, and proof of delivery is a signature on paper that is hard to find when a dispute comes in.
We built Canny Logistics around one rule: data captured once at the start travels with the shipment to the end. An uploaded invoice is read by OCR, an operator verifies every extracted field against confidence badges, and the verified record becomes the CN/GCN, the printable CN PDF, the box labels and the delivery record — nobody re-types it. Every box gets its own QR identity and scan history, so scans are checked in real time: unknown labels, boxes from another shipment and repeat scans are flagged, and missing boxes automatically become exceptions with an owner and a recorded resolution. Status moves through pickup, transit, out for delivery and delivered with guards against invalid jumps, and a shipment can only be marked delivered once proof of delivery — receiver, signature, photo and GPS — is captured. Around that core sit freight rate cards and quotes, line-haul manifests, NDR and RTO queues, COD collection and remittance batches, e-way bill records, a public tracking page and a management dashboard with CSV, Excel and PDF exports.
Node.js + TypeScript + Express modular monolith with one module per business domain (shipments, boxes, scans, delivery, freight, manifests, COD, e-way bills)
Prisma ORM over a relational schema of 28 models — every shipment, box, scan, status change and exception is a first-class row
Hybrid OCR pipeline: local text extraction for text-based PDFs, Azure Document Intelligence for photos and scans, always followed by operator verification
Server-side RBAC across six roles (Super Admin, Management, Operations, Warehouse, Delivery, Customer); customer logins only ever see their own shipments
Opaque-token QR labels that carry no customer data, generated for 1 to 500+ boxes per shipment
PDFKit for printable CN/GCN documents and label sheets
React Native (Expo) Android app for camera barcode scanning, invoice capture and on-device POD with signature, photo and GPS
Responsive web Operations Console, public marketing site and public tracking page, all served by the same API
Append-only audit log of status changes, scans, exceptions and resolutions
“Canny Logistics shows how we approach operations software: model the real unit of work — the box, not the shipment line — keep a person in control of every AI extraction, and refuse to mark anything delivered without evidence.”
— Canny Logistics Product Team, Canny Technologies
Canny Logistics is live in production: a web Operations Console, an Android app for scanning and proof of delivery, and public tracking, all on one API and one schema. Because each box has its own identity and scan history, short shipments are caught before they reach the customer rather than after a complaint. Failed deliveries land in an NDR queue instead of being forgotten, COD collections roll up into remittance batches, and every delivery dispute has a signature, photo and GPS location behind it. Adding freight rate cards, manifests and e-way bill records cost little precisely because each one is another view over the same verified shipment record.
